Handling and Storage Instructions
Moving and lifting
Be sure to close all drums valves when not in use. The valves of empty drums should also be closed. Ensure that the drums are transported in that way that they do not tip, fall or roll. Also, valves or taps should be closed before moving the drums. Appropriate lifting devices, such as cradles or nets, must be used when using a crane, hoist or derrick to transport drums. Do not use magnets or slings to lift drums.
Storage
Drums should be properly secured at all times to prevent tipping, falling or rolling. Store cylinders in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in accordance with local regulations. A drum storage area should be located where the drums will not be knocked over or damaged by falling objects. The drums taps may break off, if the drums fall over. The storage area must be free of ignition and heat sources and reactive products.
Overheating
In order to prevent potential hazards the pressure vessel legislation stipulates that vessels must not be heated to a temperature of above 50°C during draining.
Vessels must not be heated using a naked flame. Local overheating can cause micro structural changes in the vessel material and reduce the vessel's pressure loading capability. It may also cause the Solkatherm to decompose.
Corrosion protection
Empty vessels must be sealed in order to prevent moisture and dirt from entering. Moisture causes corrosion in steel cylinders. This causes rust, which may weaken the walls of the cylinder. Corrosion and dirt particles from the vessels can also cause faults in systems where Solkatherm will be employed.
