Delivery and handling Iodine pentafluoride is shipped in spherical pressure vessels of steel and is transported under normal pressure. IF 5 should be removed from the vessels only as a liquid and with suitable equipment, and only by qualified and well-trained staff. Dry nitrogen may be used to pressurize the vessels (2 ? 5 bar) for faster withdrawal of the liquid. All equipment coming into contact with IF 5 has to be clean (free of grease) and dry. All metal parts must first be rendered passive with a fluoride coating. For the safe handling of IF 5 , the special safety regulations applicable to hydrofluoric acid should be observed. For emergencies, compressed-air breathing equipment and adsorption agents such as cryolite or sodium carbonate, as well as appropriate fire-extinguishers (no water!) must be on hand.
