Solvay in Frankfurt:
The tenth anniversary of the acquisition of the Hoechst AG fluorine business
Frankfurt, 01.07.2006. Exactly ten years ago, with effect from July 1st 1996, the Solvay Group acquired most of the Hoechst AG fluorine business. The transaction also included the purchase of facilities on the premises of the present Höchst industrial park in the area of Frankfurt with the same name. To mark the anniversary, around 400 visitors were the guests of Solvay Fluor GmbH this Saturday on the Frankfurt site, among them business partners and employees from various sites, including their families, and former employees.
One of the products produced at the Frankfurt factory is the hydrofluorocarbon Solkane® 134a, which is predominantly used as a refrigerant. In particular, this Solvay product is used in supermarket freezers, in industrial refrigeration systems and in vehicle and building air-conditioning systems. The Solkane® 134a pharma grade as well as the Solkane® 227 pharma grade which is also manufactured in Frankfurt are primarily used in the pharmaceutical sector for the metering of medicines such as asthma medicinal preparations. In addition, at its Frankfurt site, Solvay Fluor GmbH is operating the world’s first plant which can split fluoroorganic compounds into the reusable components, hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid.
The products of the Solkane® product range developed positively in recent years and they contribute to Solvay being the European market leader in fluorochemicals and ranking second on the global market. The Frankfurt Solvay factory is employing about 100 people.
